Stonington Kelp Co is a regenerative ocean farm owned and operated by Suzie Flores and her husband Jay Douglas. We are dedicated to sustainably growing native sugar kelp that is great for the environment and the community. We are always looking for new ways to partner with the community through education and outreach.

 

Our KELP

We grow sugar-kelp exclusively using a zero input rope method which means we use no fresh water, no arable land, and no fertilizer. Our kelp absorbs carbon and nitrogen from the water while it grows resulting in a nutrient dense super food that helps clean the ocean. The 2021 harvest begins March 15th. The water in fisher’s island sound has some insane clarity - we averaged 20 feet this year when measuring with our secchi disk. The kelp can lay low in the colder water and still photosynthesize while fully taking advantage of the nutrient load
